Historical maps are essential sources of information for urban monument preservation whether as a collection of historical buildings or for entire city districts. The kick-off workshop for the UrbanMetaMapping Transfer (UMMT) project investigated how information about buildings can be unlocked from historical paper maps, enriched with additional information from other sources and analysed in depth. The workshop participants discussed amongst other topics:
- research questions related to historical maps
- how archived maps and related documents can be indexed and made digitally accessible
- the benefits of historical research for heritage preservation
- automated vectorisation of historical maps for spatial analysis
- potential funding opportunities.
